April 23 – Jeju

Dolhareubang Statue on Mass Ave

I was walking along Mass Ave and this funny statue caught my eye. The stone work is so interesting with the sponge-like appearance. I read the plaque explaining the statue (found on the Korean embassy’s lawn) -and learned that stone carved statues like this one traditionally are found on the volcanic island of Jeju. They were erected to ward off danger and harm, while exhibiting the humorous and smiling appearance of a friendly, neighborhood grandfather. You learn something new everyday! I kind of want one of these for my apartment entrance now…

Heading to LA tonight!!
